Inflammation of the vocal cords will change the voice, as in a common cold, but sometimes smoking or gastro-oesophageal reflux may cause on-going problems.
Asthma inhalers can also cause some irritation to the vocal cords. Voice rest may allow the voice to recover to normal but if the hoarseness persists for more than three weeks the vocal cords should be examined.
