After ‘open cavity’ or canal wall down surgery for cholesteatoma the resulting cavity can accumulate wax over the years which may need cleaning out. Occasionally cavities become infected and if this happens frequently reconstructive surgery or obliteration of the cavity may help to dry the ear up. This can be carried out using a flap of muscle rotated into the cavity to fill the space and restore more normal anatomy.
