Neck lumps are common in children and are very rarely due to any serious condition. In adults however they can be the first sign of serious underlying conditions and need urgent assessment. Mr Spraggs has been running the ‘Neck Lump Clinic’ in the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital for the last 15 years which assesses over 300 patients with a neck lump each year.
At the North Hampshire ENT partnership we will see patients with neck lumps urgently. A thorough examination in clinic may be all that is required but more commonly we will need to examine the lining of the throat and sometimes arrange blood tests, a scan and a biopsy of the lump. These tests can be usually arranged on the day of your appointment, but if this is not possible, they will be performed within a day or two.
