International Cochlear Implant (CI) day

Posted on 25th February 2026

Today marks International Cochlear Implant (CI) day.

Carol Xie implants a Cochlear Nexa implant for Mr Michael Gaskin at Basingstoke And North Hampshire Hospital (Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust), operating as part of the University Of Southampton Auditory Implant Service.

As we celebrate the anniversary of the first CI implanted in 1957, we reflect on the importance of the conversion of silence to sound. As a surgeon, Carol is often asked what it’s like to perform a procedure that restores a sense. Today, on International Cochlear Implant Day, she reflects on the whole team that it takes to make this happen, as well as the rehabilitation and journey ahead.

Adult hearing loss is not just an "aging issue" but a critical factor in cognitive and social longevity. Hearing health is related to brain health. Don`t suffer in silence, get your hearing sorted!
